THE SALVATION ARMY.

MUSICAL FUNCTION".

His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. il. Jackson) presided at the Salvation Army's musical function in aid of the Instrument Fund, at the Barracks, Masterton, last night, Avhen a large number of people Avere present. The Mayor, in opening the proceedings, commented upon the useful social work of the Army, and laid special stress *ipou its magnificent efforts among the soldiers during the late Avar. His Worship signified his pleasure at being present at the meeting, and formally declared the proceedings open.

Addresses were given by prominent Army leaders, and the following musical programme Avas submitted: —

.Marches, '' Rule _ Jehovah and " SI. Xeonards,'' and selections from old fa■vourites by the Army Band. Vocal _olos Avere rendered by Mrs Adjutant .Parker, of Carterton, and Mr E. Sawyer; a A_cal trio by Mr and the Misses ■Collyer; and recitations by Miss Grace Willoughby. The concluding item was Lord is My Shepherd," by the jcompany.

Several largo tables Avere abundantly Mupplied Avith many tempting delicacies, the supper arrangements being in the ■hands of a 'capable- ladies' committee .onsisting of Mesdames Ensign SaAvyer, T. Walsh, Coilyer, _. SttAvycr, Devonport, Liddington, and Barker, Avho also carried out all arrangements in connection with the tea at 6 p.m.

The Masterton Municipal and Citizens Band assisted the Salvation Army Hand in its efforts to raise the necessary funds in aid of instruments. The Army officials- tender their thanks for •the generous help received.

It is hoped, as the result of tho jecent effort, that about £10 will be added to the fund.
