Mr Henry Holland (ex-Mayor of Christchurch), the Independent Liberal candidate for Christchurch South, openO'l his campaign to-night. He si'd he v-as standing as a Liberal because ho 1 bought the middle and lower classes might expect more from a Liberal - vernment than from the Heforin Cc*eminent, and he. said that, while still retaining the greatest respect for Mr Massey and other leaders of the Beform Party, he was strongly in favour of the continuance of the present system of free, secular and compulsory education. He favoured the Railway Department acquiring the Lyttelton-Wellington ferry service, and running it m conjunction with the railways. He received a vote of thanks.
