CORRESPONDENCE.

LAST NIGHT'S DEBATE

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I would be pleased if you will allow me space to express my appreciation, of tlie innnner in which the IV.M.C.A. otncials conducted a debate last night, the subject beiiiLr. "If the ILabour Party came into power soon, bow would they immediately proceed?'' The debate, or rather discussion, on the subject brought forth some most unexpected ideas, which were a treat to listen to. and also proved the necessity of n better understanding of local and political necessities. Mr Combs spoke fo-n-iblv on the duties of the Government as regards the land and education-

al questions, his remarks being follow-'-Aed with evident attention arid pleasure. Tenneut also gave some advice, was very appropriate. Mr Donald also spoke as a representative of the y.M.C.A. Other speakers who, I understand, are local Labour enthusiasts. .also spoke. The point I wish to make .in referring to this matter is the great

value of debating societies, from a social and educational point of view. The Progrossh c League a"d Welfare League' should certainly take part in these debates and expound their views in such, a manner as; would arouse genuine enthusiasm, and also justify their titles, -which suggest s 0 much. In auticipation I thank you for your I'avoin. — I-am, etc.,

OCCASIONAL VISITOR ATasterron, June 12th.
