WAGES OF BOROUGH EMPLOYEES.
That the Borough Council Mould sooner or later be faced with the question of granting its staffs an increase in wages, was generally recognised, and the right policy was adopted by the Council in dealing with the matter straight away. If one section of workers were given an increase of wages it was obvious that a meeting or two later another section would make a similar application. In the circumstances the Council might spend several nights in dealing with the wages question. By deciding to review the wages of the whole of the staff at one meeting the Council not only saved time, but dealt with the matter in a business-like manner. We think that the Council met the employees very reasonably. The work of the stokers at the gasworks is most laborious and unpleasant, and few will quibble at the increase of 2s per shift given thorn. In proportion to the conditions of work, ihe rest of the staff have been reasonably treated with a shilling rise. It is apparent that the Councillors arc prepared to meet the borough employees fairly, and (heir action will meet with approval.
