THE COUNCIL ELECTION.

In the Council election . the Citizens' ticket secured seven seats out of tho eight they contested. In view of tho fact that the polling- was much heavier than usual, the successful candidates have every reason to congratulate themselves on their victory. We believe, with ex-Councillor O'Leary, that the people have got a splendid Council. Many ratepayers in the town will regret Mr O'Leary-'a defeat, for he ha 9 done very useful work on the Council. We think that the present moment is a fitting opportunity to acknowledge the services of those councillors who- did not seek re-election. Ex-Councillors Temple, Chapman and Rippon performed splendid work in the interests of the ratepayers. Mr Temple devoted his chief energies to the gasworks, though, of course, in other Council work, his marked ability was noticeable But as chairman of the gas committee Mr Temple has rendered particularly good service, as a perusal of the article elsewhere in this issue referring to the rapid growth of tho gasworks will show, and his successor will find it a hard matter to keep up to the standard set by him. Mr Chapman was a conscientious, hard-working councillor, who devoted much time to the affairs of'the borough, and who gave each matter his careful attention. Mr Rippon, too-, rendered good service in many respects. Of the defeated councillors who sought reelection, Messrs Russell and O'Leary both gavo of their best to the borough, and for this reason they have earned the gratitude of tho ratepayers and burgesses. The ingoing Council has some awkward questions to deal with, but they should be competent to give these matters intelligent attention in the best interests of the borough.
