SMALL FARM POLICY.

Iv the course of a speech at Christchurch yesterday the Hon. G. W. Kussell said that the day of tho big holdings in New Zealand must end. if thoy wore not cultivated as tho requiromente of tho Dominion necessitated. That is good so far as it goes. But why allow big holdings to exist at all , ? From one end of New Zealand to the other there is a land hunger. Jf the big properties were cut up into small farms the demand for land would bo met, and tho country would be ever so much more prosperous. There, are, however, in this country many public men who go about with tongue in cheek, crying aloud: "Cut up the big holdings,' , ".Stop this aggregation, "just :'s another section, also with tongue, in cheek, exclaim iv their loudest voieo, "Down with tho trusts, , ' "Sweep this American, menace away." The fa«-t is that Ministers of tile Cnuvn, lil;e these demonstrative public men, are not always sincere in l ! ieh- statements. They adopt a parrot cry either because it is popular, or be.cMiise it hi..los their real feelings. W'ertj Mastertou to be surrounded by smaller holdings the town and district would

grow in wealth and prosperity to au extraordinary extent. Unfortunately, we are still waiting for a champion of Cue landless man to appear who will, in and cut of Parliament, demand from the Government a progressive land policy i'or this district.
