THE MODERATE LEAGUE
"PUBLIC MEETING AT MASTERTON.
The Moderate League, under the auspices of which a public meeting is to be held in the Opera House, Masterton, on Thursday nest, was originally formed to protect the interests of the Moderate League as between two extremes on the liquor question—the prohibitionists on the one hand, and the Trade on the other. The League's committees are formed of prominent business men who have felt it to be their duty to endeavour to preserve the balance of reasonableness on licensing matters, whilst at the same time moving for far-reaching Teform. As long ago as 1915 the League approached the Government with a com-
plete programme of licensing reform,
but were requested by the Prime Minis(Mr Massy) not to press the matter wWtil the abnormal conditions of war time were passed. The League is very strong in its disapproval of the subsequent action of the Government in yielding to the agitation of the prohibi-
tionists and plunging the country into
the turmoil of a special referendum, I when internal unity is most needed, and ' those who attend the meeting on Thursday night will hear some straight talk from the speakers on recent happenings, and their bearing on the general political aspect. *
