THE ARCTIC.

STEFANSSON'S RETURN

'Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Friday, at 32.55 p.m.) OTTAWA, Thursday. The report that Stefansson, the explorer, is at Fort Yukon is incorrect. The Marine Department understands ■rhat he is still aboard his' ship at Herschell Island, and probably intends to travel overland to Fort McPhersou and meet the Royal North-West Mounted Police patrol from Dawson. The result of his discoveries is not jLexpected until the summer. jgk (A cable message from San Francisco Won June 16th last stated that Mr Stefansson intended to make an attempt to cross from the Arctic to the North Sea passage through the Pacific and the Atlantic' Although some of his companions returned at the end of last year, Mr Stefansson steadily carried on his researches in the Arctic, north of North America. In September, 1916, a party of six, under Dr Rudolf Anderson, were reported to have reached Lor'ne, in Alaska. They had mapped the Arctic coastline of Canada eastward from the Cape Parry Peninsula for a long distance, and had made geological as well as" topographical surveys of a large area midway between Alaska and the mouth of Hudson Eay, a process of correction being applied to Franklin's charts. Large copper fields were discovered, and many ethnological and other scientific data collected. Stefansson was reported in May, 1916, to be exploring the north-west coast of the new land discovered by him north of Prince Patrick Land in June, 1915.)
