AT THE FRONT.
LETTERS FROM SOLDIERS. The following aro extracts from .letters received from soldiers now at the front: — .FROM. PALKSTIXK. 1. am writing iv bed. .Night time is the only time you feel like writing, as tho heat during the day i.s terrible. Today (August 14th, 19J7) J have completed three years in the army, and am still going strong. Jt is six months since I left our JOgyptian cam]). 1 have not had a day off duty or a .single hour on sick parade, A number of the men returning to A'ew Zealand have only just seen the desert, and no more. People generally have no idea of" the number of men on this front (Palestine). What we dislike most is when the whole of the. division is on the move and tho Turkish aeroplanes come over and drop their bombs on us. Being en masse, someone must get hit. You simply have to trust to Providence, for there is no way of your getting to cover. This was has been going on long enough for any man to know now where his duty lies. li r ho does not he will soon find out when all the boys get back to New Zealand. Respecting thoee follows who are being turned down in New Zealand as medically unfit, a terrible number of them must be in a remarkably poor condition. You ought to sco some of the old hands hero, who still keep on battling along. They keep on getting patched up if necessary, but they go on with tlic game, and carry on —men that firr» worth their weight in gold. Medically unfit, of course, they are. but they keep on iv spite of it all. F.IJOM FRANCE. About the Avorst things Fritz has in stock at prosent are his gas and his flu mo shells—both burn terribly. Fritz cannot, now toach the French anything in " frightfulncHH. " Tho Frenchman id Fritz's groatoKt "nightmare." The French seem to have changed in character. Nothing dismays them. Germany dreads France's growing, cold, determined toll of vongcan.ee, Avhich she is determined to exact to tho uttermost. Franco has turned into an ominous tcrriblo monaco to Germany, quite unlike tho impetuous people the Huns expected to deal with. Franco will havo her day, and it will be an awful one for the Huns.
