THE WESTERN FRONT.
Further minor successes by the British are recorded in the cables to-day. A system of trenches, at the foot of Serre Hill, which were strongly held, were captured by the British. The operations extended over a front of threequarters of a mile, and the number of prisoners taken (215) exceed tho British casualties. At other points of tho front the British have pierced the enemy lines. The enemy has attempted to emulate the deeds o f our troops, but they have failed signally, thus showing that we possess the initiative at all points, and are able to hold the enemy in check when he makes any attempt to move. Operations on the French front are confined chiefly to artillery engagements. It is yet too early to expect engagements on a large scale on the western front, ancl, as we pointed out some time ago, there will bo much "nibbling" by th<j Allies before a big blow is struck.
