A POPULAR PASTIME.

THROWING CARROTS AT CHINAMAN. The Chinese fruiterer located in Queen street, near Maltby's, must get a pretty hot time from the lads of Masterton. Last Court day one lad was convicted of throwing vegetables at him, and to-day another boy, named Everard Koberts, was charged with throwing missiles at the Celestial. Defendant pleaded not guilty. The Chinaman, in evidence, said (indicating Koberts): "He throw carrot, parsnips, three nights. He came bother me, and he say. -Yon want light 'em.' He then hit me.'' "He struck me tirst," interjected the lad, "and I struck him back." Constable I'enson said he saw :i crowd outside the Chinese shop. Roberts said he was having a bit of fun, and the Chinaman came out and ''smacked him, and he smacked him back." The Chinaman's head was bleeding, and he said Koberts had struck him. Koberts denied that he. threw any carrots or other vegetables. He was in the shop to "see the fun." The Chinaman hit him first and he hit him back. Defendant was convicted and fined ~>s and costs 7s.
