THE SOMME BATTLE.
VIOLENT GERMAN ATTACKS,

LONDON, Wednesday.
British official: A German attack at night was directed on our new positions east of the Bazentin village.
Very large German reinforcements were collected for this attack.
After an intense artillery preparations the first assault was delivered in densemasses at 5.30 o'clock in the after-
noon. The fighting continued all night long, and was particularly violent in. the De Livelle wood.
After suffering the heaviest losses the* enemy succeeded in recapturing a portion of the wood and obtained a footing; in the northern out&Kirts of Longueval .
The struggle continues
Violent German attacks elsewhere, including three separate attacks on the Waterlot farm, completely broke down* under our fire
No event of importance has occurred on the rest of the front.
