THE ADVANCE ON PERONNE.
The success with which tho French are meeting on the southern side of tho Somme river has resulted in a small cluster of villages! falling into their hands. They are now in a position which will enable them to cause considerable inconvenience to tho Germans further south by seriously damaging certain of their lines of communication. The villages of Fuilleres, llerbecourt, Flaucourt, and Assevillers are situated on the semi-circular area of land inside of the bend in the Somme river where it changes' from a northerly to a westerly course in its progress towards the coast. The town of Peronnc, which the French are now approaching, lies outside of this bend, and on tho opposite side of the river. The road and railway line connecting Peronno with the German armies to tho south-west cros-s the Somme at-Pennine, and run almost due south along the western side of the river for a few miles before they take a more westerly bend. But the -cutting of these particular lines of communications by the French would not isolato the Germans to the south-west of Peronne altogether, as another road and railwayline lead up to the same points from Ham and Nesle, in tho south-east. ' It is not likely, therefore, that tho Germans to tho south-west, of Peronne, down towards Chaulhes-and Roye, will bo forced to fall back across tho Somme for some time yet.
