WONDERFUL GUNNERY.
LONDON, Sunday
Mr Browne, the Daily Mail's Chicago correspondent, forwards a vivid despatch on the Servian campaign. The Germans, he writes, used a wonderful new type of mountain mortar, which, though light, threw immensely heavy shells at au effective accurate range of jive miles. The Servian artillery was pitifully insufficient to cope with them, and the rilling of their cannon was worn out in three weeks.
The Austro-Germaus fired an unbelievable number of shrapnel and high explosive shells, and had apparently inexhaustible ammunition.
The German engineers showed amazing skill and judgment in selecting the positions for batteries and natural shelters. The torrents of shells began at daylight, and fell with deadly accuracy among the Sorbs, who were utterly unable to escape. "Wherever they moved shells drove them out.
The Germans took their artillery to high mountains, scaling precipices, and accomplishing unheard-of feats, always outflanking the Serbs aud forcing them to retreat.
