MELBOURNE, Tuesday,

One of the greatest blazes in the history of Melbourne broke out yesterday afternoon, when a three-storey building, occupied by the Dyson Company, wholesale stationers, in Collins street, near King street, was completely burnt ont.

The flames had secured a good hold when the brigade arrived, and they spread rapidly to the neighbouring Aberdeen Buildings, the top storey of which w r as burnt out.

The brigade finally controlled the fire. Soldiers assisted the brigade in keeping back the crowd.

Tram traffic in Collins street was suspended.

The damage done was very heavy.
