THE DARDANELLES CAMPAIGN.

THE WITHDRAWAL OF TROOPS.

"A SPIRIT OF DEVOUT GLADNESS."

(Received Wednesday, 9.0 a.m.)

MELBOURNE, Wednesday,

The Hon. W. M. Hughes (Federal Premier), commenting on the evacuation of Anzae and Suvla Bay, said that he felt he was speaking for Australia when he said that the news of the withdrawal of the troops with insignificant losses would be received in a spirit of devout gladness, chastened with regret. The withdrawal was imperative. Australia was in the war to the end, and the evacuation would serve but as a spur in our resolute purpose. The soldiers had left Anzae, but their glory woidd for ever remain. That soil was soaked with heroic blood. Australia now turns serenely with a resolute face towards the enemy. He was sure that our brave soldiers will in other fields uphold the reputation won at Gallipoli.
