PERSONAL ITEMS.

Pipe-Major McDonald, of Masterton, has decided to offer his services' for the front. Corporal C. M. Perry, sou of Mr William Perry, of Masterton, who was invalided to Euglaud, has returned to the front.

Signaller C. Redman, son of Mr F. R. Redman, of Masterton, who joined the New Zealand Reinforcements, is spending his final leave iv Masterton.

Miss M. Ryan, of the W.F.CA. staff, has been nominated as tho Hibernian Queen in connection with the Friendly Societies' Carnival Queen competition. Mr J. W. Blackman, manager of tho Masterton gasworks, was last night granted leave of absence from December 23rd to January 2nd by the Masterton Borough Council.

Mr C. Matheson, eldest son of Mr W. B. Matheson, of Rongomai, has been granted extended leave by the Wellington Education Board, in order to join the Expeditionary Forces.

Major W. F. G. Levin, of Greatford, has been dangerously wounded. Major Levin, who is attached to the Wellington Mounted Rifles, went out with the Second Reinforcements.

Dr. Peter Gordon aud Miss Grace Gordon returned to Masterton last night. Dr. Gordon wil carry on Dr, Cowio's practice until the latter gentleman returns. Dr. Graham Robertson, who is at present acting as locum tcnens for Dr. Co.vie, intends to offer his services to the military authorities.

Before the closiug of tho .Hamua school for the summer holidays, the pupils made a presentation of a handsome case of silver-mounted ebony hair brushes to the headmaster (Mr P. A. D. Mickle), who has been promoted to the charge of tho Manakau school.

After the completion of the business at the Borough Council meeting last night, Cr Temple, on behalf of tho Councillors, extended to the Mayor and Mayoress, Borough staff, and the press, the season's greetings, which were heartily reciprocated by the Mayor, the Town Clerk (Mr Archer), and the man. ager of tho gasworks (Mr Blackman).

Mrs E. Tildesley, of Mangamahoe, died yesterday afternoon. The deceased lady, who was 54 years of age, was well-known throughout the district, where she had resided for about ,_0 years. She leaves a grown-up family, consisting of Messrs H., E. and F., Mrs A. E. Frieud (Masterton), Mrs W. Larson (Ilaunui), and Msses Edith, LyYua aud May Tildesley.

Private Arthur Scales, son of Mr G. H. Scales, of the Lower Hutt, and a member of the main New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has died from enteric fever. He wa3 attacked with fever at the Dardanelles, and was removed to Oxford Hospital, whore he died. This is the second son lost to Mr Scales through tho war, Private Jack Scales' having been killed in action. A third son, Private Athol Scales, is now laid up in London, suffering from malaria.

A splendid example of patriotism, and the length to which a young colonial will go in order to be able to serve his country in time of neod, is presented by the return to New Zealand from Ameraic of Mr Len Hooper, son of Mr L. J. Hooper, late of Masterton. Mr Hooper left New Zealand in 1909, and on arrival in San Francisco his first step was to enter the University of California and graduate as pharmacist. The following year he received his degree as Doctor "of Pharmacy. Latterly Mr Hooper has been engaged representing and introducing the drug firm of Eli Luly and Co., one of America's leading pharmaceutical and biological laboratories. The firm have granted him leave of absence for two years. After a short visit to his relatives in New Zealand, it is Mr Hooper's" intention to join the colours and-go into camp. Prior to his departure from New Zealand he passed his examination aud received a commission as a lieutenant. Mr Hooper is deserving of great credit for his patriotic action in relinquishing a lucrative position, and travelling from America for the purpose of enlisting.
