WEST OF THE NIEMEN

PETROGRAD, Tuesday

A carflmunique states that the German counter offensive west of the Niemen has been everywhere stopped. The Germans attached enormous importance to their Niemen offensive. The 31st Division, with, three reserve regiments and much cavalry, was ordered to push to Lozdzieje (25 miles east of the Prussian border) at all costs. The Germans made prodigious efforts, and attempted to envelop the Russian right north of Lozdzieje by crossing a frozen lake at Dusia. A large number penetrated the Russian rear, but were entirely annihilated.
