Mr C. N. Baeyertz returned from Sydney by "tho Ulimaroa yesterday. " Mr Malcolm Ross has been appointed official correspondent to the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces Mr-J.'T. M. Hornsby, M.P. for Wairarapa, and Dr. McNab, M.P. tor Hawke's Bay, were in Napier on Monday on a visit to Mr Vigor Brown, M..1 - Tho New York World states that ■Madame Melba has accepted an offer of £1000 a week to appear at Kemi s Vaudeville Theatres in America. The Prime Minister's son, Mr M. o. Massey, solicitor, of Auckland, is to leavo for Trentham in about a week to jjoin tho reinforcements drafts as quar-ter-master-sergeant. ; Constable D. P. Cantlon, of Mount Cook Station, Wellington, has been appointed to Constable B. .L arrant at Masterton.'' , " Mr A. Pryde has been appointed to represent the Nireaha branch of the Farmers' Union at the provincial conference to be held at Pahiatua on May 18th. ■Mr E. 8. Douglas, open golf champion of New Zealand, intends to compete at the Australian championships %o hd held in Sydney next September. At the patriotic concert at FeatherBton last night, Mrs J. M. Coradine (Mayoress of-Masterton) was presentee, by little Miss Ida Card, on behalf ot the ladies of Featherston, with a handsome bouquet. Mr D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., leaves lor Sydney to-morrow on three weeks' holiday. Mr G. Cruiekshnuks, S.M., of InveTcargill, will act as relieving Magistrate at Wellington during Mr Cooper's absence. , Lieutenant 0. R. F. Johnston, ot Wellington, a son of the Hon. C. «»• Johnston, and formerly a subaltern of the sth (Wellington) Regiment, has been at the front for some time with the •Middlesex Regiment. The death occurred on Monday night, 5n her Slstyear, of one of Bunnythorpo's oldest and most esteemed residents, Mrs Sarah Ann Boddy, relict of the late William Boddy. A letter has been received by Mr A. X Graham, of Palmerston North, from Dr. A. A. Martin, of that town, stating that the. letter's'term as an army surgeon w&s nearly up, and that as so.on. as ho was released' from service he would return to New Zealand.
At a meeting of the Labour Representation Committee at Wellington last evening, the members stood as a mark of respect while a motion was passed expressing sympathy with Mr "E. Hunter, of Misterton, organiser of the Wellington Rural Workers' Union, in the death of his wife.
A sub-committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society has been formed at Pahiatua, comprising the following gentlemen: —Messrs Wakeman. H. Griffith, J. G. Swainson, L. A. Ward, Powell, T. Verry, and E. Matthews. Mr Wakeman was appointed chairman, and •Mr Swainson hon. secretary. The Hon. W. F. Massey on Monday celebrated his 59th birthday, having been born in Londonderry on March 29th, 1856. Mr Massey arrived in Auckland in the ship City of Auckland in 1869, and has, therefore, been a resident, of the Dominion for 46 years. He was first elected to Parliament- in 1894. Captain A. C. Parker, son of Mrs Parker (sister of Lord Kitchener), is at present on special service in EgyptCaptain Parker was formerly in the, New Zealand Defence Forces (South Canterbury), from which he passed into the British army. He served in Egypt for some years, and then joined the Egyptian Civil Service. He was for ten years Governor of the Peninsula of Sinai. .--,/. Since' Mr Tan Henare found hmiseli firmly fixed in his Parliamentary seat by the dismissal of the petition against his return (says the Luminary), he has applied himself assiduously to his duties as representative of the Northern Maori people, and has impressed both Maori and Pakeha by his sincerity and energy. Mr Vernon Reed will find his «o-member a very active help in promiting the interests of the North. Mr Sutton having resigned the position of clerk to the Castlepoint County Council, the duties will be taken over by Mr E. F. Jennings, as from to-day. ','.;■■. In its annual report the committee of the Masterton Golf Club, states:— We rogTet to report that our professibnnl, W. McEwan, left us at the end of January to take up the post of professional to the Auckland Golf Club. Lack of support from the district clubs precluded the possibility of your committee retaining his services. He has done excellent work amongst us, and we congratulate the Auckland Golf Club on securing his services, and him on his appointment.
