Referring to the Press Association message from Auckland, stating that tho Hon. James Allen, Minister of Defence, had told a deputation from tho W.C.T.U. that ho had already given au assurance- that no wet canteen would be established at Trentham, Mr A. A. S. Menteath, prosident of tho New Zealand Moderate League, stated to-day that the executive was surprised at the announcement, as, iv replying to the league's deputation a few days ago, Mr Allen had said that ho had au open mind on the question, and would, if he found it advisable, endeavour to find means of getting round tho law in order that a wet canteen might bo established. So far as the league knew, this was Mr Allen's public pronouncement, and they were writing to tho Minister, asking whether he had been correctly reported in yesterday's message, and if so,, to whom tho assurance referred to had been given.
