GERMANS' TREMENDOUS EFFORT.

VIGOROUS FIGHTING CONTINUES,

PETROGRAD, Saturday. The German attempts to force the defence at Borjimoff by sheer weight, using infantry as cavalry, as used in the old days, nave hitherto Jailed . Their formation was unprecedented since Macedonia. A phalanx of 140,000 infantry, with a hundred batteries, were employed on a sevenmile front, advancing sixteen deep. Several divisions were massed solid, in one place, "being less than 1200 yards wide. The Germans christened them "The Divisions of Death " A series of low hills behind and in front facilitated this extraordinary massing. The artillery of the Germans had never been more prodigal with blood and ammunition. It fought day and night incessantly. General Hindenberg abandoned military science, and relied solely on the reckless expenditure of lives and a hurricane of shells. Supreme attacks were made on Tuesday on Rawka, after the Russian artillery had put in a day of unceasing slaughter. The Russians counterattacked on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday fierce hand to hand fighting ensued every 500 yards. The enemy was driven across the Rawka at Voliachidrowska. The Prussians Guards from Lowicz, whom the Emperor had ordered -to show the way to Warsaw, were driven back across the Rawka. Fighting conitnues with unabated vigour. Military critics declare that the world has never seen such fighting. The German methods indicate that success is now a matter of life and death. The Germans are making a final desperate effort to blast a new road to Warsaw.
