C. McDonald, tho new pipemajor for the. Wairarapa Caledonian Pipe Band, arrived in Masterton from' the north yesterday. Miss Burbush, of the South leathernton school, who has been granted a month's leave of absence, is being relieved by Miss Edmed. Mr Douglas, of Kaiwaiwai, who recently luuf to have his leg amputated at the Greytown Hospital, is making a satisfactory recovery. A Sydney Press Association cablegram states that Professor E. Ferrer, the geologist in the first Scott Antarctic Expedition, has arrived, en route for Now Zealand. Major-Goneral Sir Luke O Connor, C.8., who died in London on February i3rd was a cousin of the Mother Superior of St. Bride's Convent, Masterton. The General was one of the heroes of the Crimean War. A London cablegram states that Lieutenant. Viscount Northland, of the 2nd Coldstream Guards, and son of Lord Ranfurly. a former Governor ot "New Zealand, died of wounds received in tho fighting at La Bassee last week. The Rev. H. H. Robjohns, who has been assistant curate at St. Matthew's Church, Auckland, for the last. four years, has been appointed assistant curate at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral, Wellington. He will first be in charge, temporarily, of St. Matthew's Church, Hastings. Mr and Mrs Robjohns leave Auckland on Saturday next by the steamer Westralia. Mr Morris Fox, F.A.S., A.1.A., Actuary to tho Government Insurance Department, died at his residence in Brougham street just before 1 o'clock this morning. Born in Leicestershire England, on May 24th, ISSB, he arrived in New Zealand in ISSO, and the. same year entered the actuarial branch of the Insurance Department. Six years later he'was sent to London to assist th consulting actuaries, and after his return he was appointed assistant-actu-ary to the department in ISSS, becoming Actuary in June of 1890. He was the secretary to the Royal Commission on Federation in 1901. and two years later was the New Zealand Government delegate to the fourth International Congress of Actuaries in New York. For some littlo time past he had been in illhealth, but his illness did not take a serious turn until a few days ago. He is survived by a widow.
