LANSDOWNE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

WELCOME SOCIAL.

The Lansdowne Presbyterian Church was crowded last evening, the occasion being a welcome social tendered by the ollice bearers of the church to Mrs Halliday, wife of the Rev. T. Halliday, and family, who have just arrived from the Old Country. Representatives were present from all the outfields in connection with the church, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. A very sumptuous tea was partaken of in the early part of the evening, the waves of the "elders and the managers of the church presiding at the tables . Much church presiding at the tables.

After the tea a public meeting was held, at which Mr P. L. Hollings presided. In welcoming Mrs Halliday to Lansdowne, he expressed the opinion that she would find the people very warm-hearted and generous, and he was sure that in. her work with the minister she would have a happy time among the people of Lansdowne and the outfields.

Air James McGregor, seiir., extended a welcome to Mrs Halliday on behalf of the outfields of the church, Rev. A. T. Thompson on behalf of Knox Church, Masterton, and the Rev. B. L. Thomas, on behalf of the Congregational Church. Mr Geo. Woods, a home missionary, who came out to New Zealand with the Rev. Halliday some two years ago, also spoke briefly.

The Rev. T. Halliday, on rising to respond on behalf of Mrs Halliday, was received with loud applause. He thanked those present for the very splendid and cordial reception given to Mrs Halliday. As far as the church was concerned, he expressed the hope that the coming year would be even more successful than the past year.

During the evening a programme consisting of the following items was rendered and much appreciated:—Anthem, choir; vocal solo, Mr Matthew Gordon; solo, Mrs Anderson; recitation, Mrs Grant; solo, Mr J. Gray; solo, Miss Myrtle McKcnzic; organ solo, Mrs A. J. Cooper; solo, Mr R. Miller; solo, Miss Ethel Anderson; solo, Mr R. J. Young; duet, Mrs and Miss Anderson; trio, Misses J. McGregor and J. Miller and Mr R. Miller; part song, choir. The singing of "God Savp the King" brought to a close one of the most successful gatherings yet held in the Lansdowne Church.
