Miss Edith M. Fairchild, late jfS Wellington, who has been a milit?Py nurse in England for some years, is afc one of the base hospitals on the Continent.

Nurse Laura James, daughter of Dr James, of Wellington, is an acting-sister

at Rouen. Other Wellington Hospital trained nurses, Sisters Lind and Hitchcock, are at Rouen, nursing under the French flag; Miss Berry is matron of a large military hospital at Preston.

Mrs J. B. McKenzie, of Masterton, took first prize for home-made bread at the Feilding show this week.

Mr George Luke, builder, of Wellington, died suddenly at . his residence, Thomson street, yesterday jßt-ning. Deceased was the youngest the late Mr Samuel Luke, founder of th© firm of S. Luke and Co., engineers.

The death is announced from Oamaru of Mrs Adamson, senr., mother of Mr James Admason, who is well known, throughout tho Wairarapa district. The deceased lady was. 77 ■■ years of age ; Yesterday morning, in the Kent terrace Presbyterian Church, Miss Wi§nic llannay, third daughter of Mr and Mrs W. M. Hannay, was married to Mr F. C. Widdop, District Engineer of Railways. The Rev. J. K. Elliott performed the ceremony.

The death occurred at Mataura yesterday morning of one of Southland's earliest pioneers—Mr Hugh Cameron, aged eighty years (says a Press Association telegram). Born at Loch Bannock, Scotland, he sailed in the ship Star of tho East to Sydney, where he transhipped to Otago in 1854, settling at Wyndham. About lSo'6 he settled at Mataura, acquiring an accommodation house, and later Cameron's hotel. He was identified with the Town Board and Borough Council, being Mayor of Mataura in 1897 and 1902. Mr Cameronwas one of a party that walked from Dunedin to Invercargill to pay tho purchase money to the Maorijjtfor the Murihiku block. He married "daughter of Mr Duncan Bain, of BlueVki-Oii 1569, and leaves a widow and four daughters, all married, and five sons, three of whom aer serving in Egypt.
