MELBOURNE, Monday
Two prisoners—Maroney and Downey —who escaped from Launceston gaol in March, and were re-arrested at Albany, were returning by the steamer Indana in charge of two constables. On entering the bay, Downey complained of illness, and left the cabin in charge of a constable, Maroney and the other constable remaining. The door was closed but not locked. Maroney dashed out, and the constable awoke, and chased round the deck. The fugitive snatched, a lifebelt and jumped overboard. In tho meantime Downey made a desperate attempt to escape, but was overpowered and handcuffed. The steamer stopped, and searched without avail for Maroney. The jump was made four miles from land, and it is believed Maroney was drowned.
