HELPING HANDS.
Amid :i mass of accounts of horse races and other Eastertide sports and amusements there has appeared in the Sydney newspapers v record of an interesting work of charity. Between Good Friday and Easter Monday "(I 1 ricklayers,' carpenters, anl labourer erected" a small villia for a widow. Not one man of the whole lot received a farthing in wages. A workman ha ! lost his life through an accident, an i the firm by whom the man lr.nl bo .mi employed gave the widow £500. Somebody interested said that in these ti-aes of high prices the bereaved woman would have very little of the money left by the time she had acquired -i house to live in rent free, and that it would be a good thing to build the house for her. More than onou.izh workers volunteered to give up their E.istor holidays in the cause. On Crool Friday half a hundred men assembled for work. By Monday night they had completed it: every detail a col--1;:!_'e containing three rooms, vestibule , , bathroom, aud wushhouse". All tli. , :r tho widow supplied was bricks and thither, so thru 'her house cost her less than £100. A well-known contrac tor i;;>vp his services as supervisor gva-.-.i-itously. Little things like this make us fee! that Australians are not :- r i 1 ad as some folks assert.
