LAUNCH PICKED UP.
LOSS OF THREE LIVES FEARED
[By Telegrapli—Press Association.] TAUEANGA, Thursday. A launch, belonging to Mr Peterson, of Motiti Island, was found tit MataIsland, at the entrance to the harbour. A portmanteau and three pairs of boots were in the launch. Constable Skinner and a party of searchers returned at 5 o'clock to-night, bringing the launch Victory, belonging to W. Peterson, of Motiti Island. It was found in the harbour yesterday, almost submerged. Search was made all day of the beaches on both sides of the harbour, without avail. Another party found on the beach of Matakana Island a lifebuoy, mast, and tin of benzine. The boots in the boat wore recognised as belonging to Mutu and Jack (natives), and It. Grey (the latter employed by Peterson on the island). The clothes belong to Motu. It is surmised that the launch foundered when entering the harbour on Tuesday or Wednesday. Nothing can be known definitely until communication is obtained With Motiti, but the sea at present is too rough for a. small craft to tackle the trip". It is hoped to dispatch a vessel in the morning to the island.
