LIMIT QUITE INADEQUATE

AUCKLAND, Friday

A discussion look place at the City Council last night, on the subject of unauthorised expenditure, one councillor having given notice that the Council had nearly reached its legal limit, and warning the Council that he presonally wouhl not be responsible if the fund Avas overdrawn. The Mayor said the Council was allowed ._''(.)(! a year for unauthorised expenditure. Avhich Avas quite inadequate for a lug city like Auckland. If members of the Council were held personally responsible for expenditure Avhirh could not lie reasonably avoided it would lead to driving men out of public positions. They gave their time to the citizens year after year, which Avas surely enough without, being called upon to put their hands in their pockets to pay for courtesies to distinguished guests, and for matters of interest to citizens, lie thought there should he legislation to increase the amount allowed for unauthorised expenditure and to indemnify the Council against, t.'igs for past expenditure of this kind.

The ' ouncil resolved to interview the Prime Minister on this subject during his next A-isit to Auckland.
