BANK NOTE ISSUE.

There are now six Banks doing business in New Zealand, but of these five only have the privilege of issuing their own banknotes, which they do under an Act. of the New Zealand Parliament. The sixth Bank, the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., which has only recently commenced business in the Dominion, is petitioning Parliament for permission to issue their own Bank notes. Although there is little profit in Now Zealand in connection with the issue of notes, owing to the heavy note tax, the convenience to the Banks and jmblic is very considerable- It is difficult to see how Parliament can refuse to grant the Commercial Bank's petition.
