SOCIALISTS AND WAR.
The introduction of the new Army Hill in the French Chamber of Deputies gave rise to an extraordinary scene. When the Minister of War began to explain why France was to add lb'o,ooo men to her army by increasing the term of service from two years to three years the Socialists of the Left Wing created an uproar. '' We protest," they shouted. "This is madness. Down with Avar!" Some of the other deputies raised a cry of "Vive la France," and in reply a Socialist leader shook his fist and replied, " You gang of rascals!" When words could be distinguished above the din created by the slamming of desk lids and cries of auger from the Socialists were shouting, "You are all sharks!" while the other groups were hurling back the taunt, "Go to the Reichstag, you Prussians!" Several personal encounters were threatened, but the intervention of the men who had kept their tempers prevented blows being exchanged on the floor of the Chamber. The German Socialists were less violent than their French comrades had been when the German Army Bill came be fore the Reichstag.
