A report was r<. , :!<i from Superintendent T. Jenkins in reference to tin , lire in Walton's Avenue on .Monday morning. The report stated that the brigade arrived at the scene of the lire only to liiitL the. water supply very defective, and the pressure totally inadequate to cope with the outbreak. Oniy one lead was used, the pressure being very feeble. The whole of the town supply has been roncentrated to the vicinity of the lire, and this caused sonic little improvement, but the pressure still remained very low, the pressure at the hydrant being 25 pounds, and at the branch lllbs, with 20U feet of hose and a three-quarter-inch nozzle. The steam fire engine had been taken out, but owing to certain instructions not having been carried out, there was a considerable delay in getting up steam. This was responsible for the engine not arriving until 22 miuut.es after the alarm was given. In regard to the firebell, the pressure was :islbs at the Central Station when the alarm was given, but this proved insufficient. Thesuperintendent recommended that a Pelton wheel and ringing gear complete be secured at a cost of about £.18 15s. The secretary was instructed to give definite insi ructions to have the gas lire kept continuously under the Jubilee lire engine during the summer season, and to light the lire under the boiler in the event of an alarm before leaving the station. It was decided to have a. Pelton wheel as recommended, provided the contractor undertakes that before payment is made :i test of the bell ringing at 251bs pressure to the satisfaction of the Board is given. A letter was received from the Mastertou Trust Lands Trustees, asking for a rental of £15 per year for the Kuripuni Tire Station, the lease of which had recently expired. The members of the Board considered that a rental of £10 per year would be sufficient, and the secretary was instructed to write to that effect. The question of sending a delegate to the Fire .Hoards' (/'onference, to bo held in Christehurch on the 25th inst., was left in the hands of the chairman. It AViiK decided to leave the matters relating to the Horougli water supply in the hands of the Borough Council representatives on the Board, as the question was being gone into by the Council.
