A two-year-old half-sister by Multifirt to Blue Ribbon, Red, White and Blue, and Paritutu will shortly join J. Griffiths' forces at, Hastiugs. Ambrosiau, who won the Karero Hurdle Handicap at the Manawatu ! meeting last week, is a iive-year-old half-sister to Danube, being by St. Ambrose—Nova, by Stepniak—Whirlpool. She was purchased by Mr F. Preston as a yearling for 410 guineas, but her form on the flat was very moderate, and judging by her second effort at Awapuni she is evidently ' a long way from being a high-class performer over hurdles yot. Cork is to be turned out for a spell. Kiua, previously raced by Mr J. R. McDonald, now carries Mr G. Penfold's 1 ivory, whilst Kiiosteri, who formerly carried the Higlulen buff and b«ue, now races in the nomination of an Ashhurst resident;. Gladiole has fully recovered from the the effects of her too close acquaintance with some barb wire, and though she started twice at the Manawatu meeting she was obviously short of work. One result of the racing at the Manawatn meeting last week was to still further discredit the Auckland two-year-old Prince Soult. it seems pretty clear now that he is some distance below the class occupied by Autumnns and Ermengarde, though his running at the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club suggested that he was one of the best juveniles of the season. Eiya and Oiillinan are sound and hearty again, after the operations performed oil tnem for throat troubles. Mallard, a winner at the Manawatu meeting last week, is a three-year-old half-brother to Nyland and Boanerges. He is by St. Ambrose, many of whose? stock seem to improve with age. Matters are not so serious with Espartero as was at first anticipated, and there is every probability that the son of Torpedo will soon be out again in the open in quest of stake money. The One Thousand Guineas (the second of the English classics) comes up for decision at Newmarket on Friday. Peroneal is to be spelled for the remainder of the season. The Kutf-fcrained Blue Lake, Ceylon, Turna and Mount Victoria are, to be sent south to the Ashburton meeting, and before returning home they will be raced at the Oamaru and Dimedin gatherings. The annual meeting of the Martou Jockey Ulub is to be held on Tuesday nexr. A copy of the balance-sheet and report is to hand from the genial secretary, Mr Arthur Way. .Both meetings during the season were successful, both from a raeiug and financial point of view. A number of improvements have been effected, including the enlarging of the saddling paddock and lawn, and the making of an ornamental lake. For both meetings the totalisntor house was enlarged, but even then the accommodation was totally inadequate. The committee has now under consideration the building of a new totalisator house and installing a silent machine, also the enlarging of the grandstand, while the levels for a grass training track have also been taken. The chief items of revenue were:—Privileges £5(51)8, entries £115)0, and snbscriptijus £l~r2. The main expenditure was £)J45)2 in stakes, £1180 Government tax, £(!2(> improvements, £-185 salaries and wages, £204 advertising and printing. Assets exceed liabilities by £y<S«l IDs Sd. A credit of £55)2 IDs was shown on the season's transactions. Nyland is making a steady recovery from his breakdown several weeks auo, when one of his ligaments was badly sprung. He is now able to walk quite soundly, but whether he will ever be able to race again is extremely problematical. "'The Hawke's Bay Stakes, of 400 soys, six furlongs and a-half, comes up for decision to-morrow. Thirteen remain in after final payments, but the likely starters are Culprit, Brown Owl, Evadue, Prince Soult Bon Ton, Formulate, Warlight, Glade. The Auckland Racing Club received excellent nominations for the Great Northern Hurdle Race and Great Northern Steeplechase, the two big events of the winter meeting at Elierslie. In the first mentioned contest there are 3<> engaged, while in the cross-country race 31 have been entered. Most of the best known jumpers in the Dominion figure in the list. A feature of the nominations, however, is the comparative absence of fresh aspirants for jumping honours. Sportsmen throughout the Dominion will regret to hear of the death of Mr James Roulston. who died at his home, Belmont, Pukekohe, on Friday last at the age of 73. The deceased gentleman was one of the oldest racing men in tho province, and his connection with tho turf in Auckland dates back for many years, says the Auckland Star. During his period of ownership, Mr Roulston had several good horses, notably, Record Reign, the foundation stone of his stud being tho Kingfisher mare Winnie, from which such a number of great winners have sprung. Until the last few years Mr Rouiston was always a prominent figure at Ellershe and other Auckland courses. The American horse Green Seal, a great performer in trie united States, who came to Australia with millionaire Whentcroft's shipment of thoroughbreds is top-weight with 9.10 w the Goodwood Handicap, a big South Australian sprint event to be run to-morrow, while tho New Zoalandere, Obsono and Sharpshooter, are asked to carry 9.3 and 7.13, respectively. x^il±
