AN EFFECTIVE WEEDDESTROYER.
In au article on the Langdaio Settlement, the travelling correspondent of a Wellington journal makes sonid interesting comments on the improvements thai JmYQ beou effected. To the homestead block by the owner, Mr Ryder. One of the chief improvements is the way Mr Ryder lias succeeded in destroying the blackberry, which was very troublesome. In referring to the eradication of this pest, the writer says:—"On looking over the property, I remarked that the blackberry was nearly all gone. Mr Ryder said he wanted me particularly to see what he had done. Whoro 1 saw a solid mass of blackberry soino throe or four years ago, was now practically clear. I only saw a few weakly shoots. On malcing inquiry. I learned that the owner had used a certain weed-destroyor. Now, I have used various kinds of so-called guaranteed noxious weed destroyers, which all seem to act as fertilisers, tis the pest comes up next season as strong, if not stronger, than over. I noticed a heap of dead blackberry roots, aud they were really dead, no doubt about it. Mr Ryder also fossick - od about—it was somo time beforo ho could find three roots. These wore dug up, and were found to be absolutely dead, both stub ana root. The crown of the stub was chipped with an adzo last June, when tho sap was down, then the poison was sprayed on, with the result that in nearly every easo there was a total clearance. The only live roots which I saw wore evidently from buds on roots to which the poison had not penetrated, but it was an undoubted tact that all the mam stubs (that is, the big roots), some as big as the two lists, which had been sprayed, were quite- dead. Should the experience of other farmers be the same, this particular destroyer will prove a great boon."" The destroyer referred to is "Lixall," which is manufactured iuMastorton, and which is proving an unqualified success everywhere it is used. Mr Ryder has given the Lixall Manufacturing Company a most flattering testimonial as to its efficacy as a weed-destroyer.
