DEFENCE STRIKE.

ANTI-MILITARISTS AT WORK.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Tho authorities at the Christchurch District Military Headquarters office in Montreal-street were considerably annoyed this morning to find that the fences surrounding the office and the King Edward Barracks had been placarded with copies of it printod manifesto, urging all and sundry to oppose conscription, and witli a number of sinafl square "stickers" bearing such mottosas: "Don't be a conscript—bo a man!" "Men—not pimps!" and "The military strike is now on!" Tho stickors bore' no imprint, and wore evidently mado with a rubber stamp, or very amateurish printing press, but the more elaborate manifesto, in addition to bearing the imprint of a local printer's firm, bore tho signature of nino porsons. ;; In addition to thoso demonstrations of disapproval of the compulsory clauses of tho Dofenco Act, a mitd attempt at incendiarism was made at the Barracks last night. Shortly after ten o'clock the Fire Brigade was called out, and the outbreak was speedily checked. Au examination made this morning by a reporter showed that, a small fire had been started in the alley-way between the street and the fence of the barracks and one of the old woodon orderly-room buildings. Tho materials used in building the fire were pieces of decayed sacking aud brown paper, evidently gathered from the grounds about tho barracks. The firo had been so quickly quelled that, it had barely scorched tiie paint at tho bottom of the weatherboards.
