BAND CONTEST.
COMPLETING THE ARRANGEMENTS,
Mastertou bandsmen wiio intend taking part in the Gisborne Band Contest will be interested in the following from the Poverty Bay Herald :— arrangements have been made by the Union S.S. Company that the ordinary steamer arriving at Gisborne on Satin-day, February 10th, will double back to Napier and leave thero again at S.:U) tiie same night, and arrive at Gisborne on Sunday morning. By so doing all the southern bands taking part in the Band Contest will be able to reach Gisborne in time for the reception on Monday, February ]'2th. Mr J. Cosgrove, who won the championship for the baritone solo under .1. Ord Hume, the great English judge, will play for The Gisborne City Band at the contest: also Mr W. Norman, who won the championship for tiie A flat tenor born solo at Nelson under the same judge who is to officiate at Gisborne next month. Mr J. Davis, wlio is the solo cornet player for the Gisborne City Band, came second at the Waiiganui contest in l'.ilt), when Mr Sidney Wolf was judge. Mr E. K. Miller, who has entered for the flugel horn solo, won the championship in this competition at Palmerstou North last year. There are four entries for the section, all being good players, and it is expected that the competition will be a very interesting one. A well known bandsman, who lias been in touch lately with the Wailu, Westport, and Palmerston Bauds, places these three bands in the A grade, competition as follows: —Waihi first, Westport second, and Palmerston third. In the B grade bis forecast is: Wangauui CiVv*, Gisborne City, Whangarei Municipal, ana Masterton Municipal. Last week a New Zealand cornet player had an opportunity of listening to the Gisborne City Band whilst they were practising, and he gave it as his opinion that under such a judge as Lieutenant Herd, who he knows well as a man of the , fire and dash class, it would be necessary for the band to brighten up the cornets, and tiie euphonium secUon was too strong. The middle of the band was good, but the general attack was poor. The attack being a special feature of the Wellington Garrison Band, he suggested that this should also be made a feature of by the, local band.
