Mr M. T. McGrafch returned to Masterton from Melbourne yesterday. Ho is combining business with pleasure. Tho Dannevirke Jockey Club lias drafted a programme for its autumn meeting on March (>th and 7th, which provides for stakes to the value of £ ISJOO.

The ex-New Zealand horseman, H. Cairns, is blamed for the defeat of tlie favourite. Paymaster, in the New Year Hurdle Race at Flemingtou. It is alleged that he rode over confidently, and so allowed Bettewynd, with another ex-New Zealand rider in J. M'Gregor up, to snatch a half-head victory.

Wellington first day acceptances full due to-night. It is understood that, her lease to "Mr Tieiui Purn" having expired, Eqnitns is likely to be taken over to Sydney this autumn. Should she make the trip her mission will be the shorter distance w.t'.a. events.

The Maoriland-bred Rathlea won the Juvenile Stakes at Randwiek on December 130 th. Tins colt lias now won three times out of six starts, so that at 2-lOgns he has proved a most profitable purchase for Mr W. Kelso, who purchased him from Mr T. H. Lowry at the last Sydney sales. The colt is by Royal Fusilier from Lissadurn. Lissadurn was bred in Victoria by the late Mr W. K. Wilson, and came to New Zealand at the break-up of the St. Albans stud. She is by Bill of Portland. Kelso (says a Sydney writer) have never professed to be a wonderful .judge of yearlings, but at different times he has succeeded in picking up some fair youngsters without paying startling prices. As Hawick has become rather badly affected in the wind. J. H. Prosser has sent liim home to his owner at Balls.

Bonny Glen, who has had a light season at the stud, has rejoined G. Murray-Aynsley's team, and is again bowling along freely ou the Riccarton tracks. Rurik has been withdrawn from his first day's Trentham engagements.

A Greymouth message says that the statement that Curator died last week is incorrect. He suffered an injury to his leg. which will prevent his racing for some time.

At Randwiek, on December :30th, the Chelmsford Handicap, one mile, went to the New Zealander, Elf boat, who was well backed. He was ridden by the Maorilaud jockey, W. Ryan. Ell'boat, who is trained by J. Whitworth for S. Wliitworth, wou a small race in the Hon. J. D. Ormond's colours last season. He is by Birkenhead from Elfiock, by Nordenfeldt from Ellin, the latter being a sister to Martini-Henry. Four of the progeny of Maniapoto (Soult—Lady Fisher) were successful during the holidays. Other sons of Soult in Marshal Soult (sire of Tripoli), Cordon Rouge (sire of Jargon), and Caurobert (sire of Daringdale) also got on the winning list during the holiday season.

Penates (says a Dunedin scribe) appears to bo about finished as a racing proposition. His front fetlocks are much enlarged, and as the enlargements are all round the joint, there is always a danger that he will strike himself when galloping.

The ex-Masterton horse, Gunboat, lias been entered in tlie Sydney Cup, two mile, to be run at Randwiek on Easter Monday.

The Foxton Racing Club has installed a silent totalisator on its racecourse and the new machine will be in use at the annual meeting this month.

In his last five starts in hurdle races Silva has finished twice first, twice second, and once third. His last performance at Marton was the best from the point of view of both time and weight. The Unworn gelding is likely to add still further to his laurels in the near future.

Lady Mcnschikofl' has made her reappearance on tiie Hawera tracks, and is being allotted slow work. The two-year-ohl iillv, Beldame belonging to Mr T. 11. Lowry, is suffering from knee trouble, and is to be spelled. Heroward, a New Zealand-bred full-brother to Turna, won the Flying Handicap at Emu Bay (Tasmania) meeting on Boxing Day and also the Final Handicap at Devonport, The Trial Stakes at the recent Calcutta meeting was won by tho Austra-lian-bred Taugaroa, the favourite. Soultline, running third. Taugaroa lias raced in Australia, England and India.

\V. Ayre, who for tlie past twelve months or so has done the light riding for J. Fryer's Hawera stable, severed his connection with that establishment on Saturday last, and lias gone up to Auckland. In 11)05 Sundndge went to the stud at £1). In 11)08 nis fee was £38, in 11)10 it was £1)8, and in 11)11 it was SOOgns. For 11)1 a owners are paying 300gns, and for JIU3 the fee is -lOOgus ! He has advanced from £1) to 400gus in eight

years. The ex-New Zoalanuor, Contorp. broke down whilst competing in a hurdle raco at Randwiek recently. Being well bred, the Conqueror horse will probably go to the stud.
