MONEY MARKET.
BIG DEMAND ON BANKS
Just as we go to press we are iv receipt of the returns of tho banks trading in Now Zealand for the quarter ended on the 31st December last. Unfortunately, these figures come too late for us to review fully iv this issue; however, the outstanding feature is the very heavy growth of advances — £3,038,000 in tho year -while the deposits have only increased by in tho samo time. ™
This shows there has been a big demand for money for various purposes, to which the banks have responded well, and the surplus funds in the bands of the banks for investment are considerably reduced, the balance of deposits over advances now beingabout a quarter of a milliou as compared with nearly three millions a year ago.—Trade Review.
