ENTERTAINMENTS.

THOMPSON-PAYNE PICTURES.

A varied aud interesting programme was screened at tho Foresters' Hall last night before a large audience. Tho dramas were a splendid lot, pride of place being awarded to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." It showed how fresh enthusiasm was infused into tho poople of the north by Mrs Julia Ward Howe's famous verses, and every line was illustrated by a series of transformation scenes, unique and thrilling. Two other dramas founded on incidents of tlie American Civil War were "Hearts and Swords" and "The Special Messonger," the latter being a splendid production, its most stirring effect being a leap over a bridge by horse and rider when pursuit was at its hottest. "The Switchman" s Tower" brought a sensational railway incident into its make-up. "Pathe's English Gazette" reviewed recont racing, athletic, military, naval and aviation scenes, and gave the women folk a glimpse of tho latest fashions •in head dross prevailing in Paris. "Storks at Home" was instructive and amusing. A dainty comedy "The Fair Dentist," pleased immensely, and rollicking laughter greeted "A Hero Almost," "Dying Hard," and "Kelly's Disgrace." The programme will bo screened again to-night.
