A frightful thunderstorm ouvoloped the steamer, aceompauied by vivid flashes of lightning which lit up the darkened sky. Two flashes struck the davits with reports like pistol shots, and played round tho ironwork ot the ship in a most terrifying mauuer. Little balls of fire fell through the air, but tho culminating point of the disturbance was reached when five waterspouts passed over the ship's bows towards the south-east. Captain Dowoll Rays that iv all his thirty-two years' experience of New Zealaud coastal waters he has never seen or heard such sights, and described the disturbance as appalling.
