MANAWATU FOOTBALLERS.
A CHARGE FAILS
An uuuecessanly lengthy Press Association message from Palmerstou North states that at the Mauavvatu Rugby Union meeting, last night, the President reported on being present with Ougley, captain of the Mauawatu team, at an inquiry held by the Tarauaki Union into the Hawera hotelkeener's charges against the Mauawatu pi ayers. A numbor of the Tarauaki players and Taranaki citizens had been in a room with the Mauawatu men. When tho Mauawatu team left, t l ie hotel bedroom was found in a disgracefully dirty couditiou, but the hotel porter (who, it was said, had not been paid certain promised tips) was the only witness who positively connected the footballers with the mischief.
A largo numbor of witnesses were examined, and in consequence tho chargo against tlie Manawatu footballers was not established. The retraction of tho Press Association (which had sent out the news when the charge was first laid by tho Jioteikeoper) was accepted, but it was decided to proceed against the Hawera Star and tiio hntelkeeper.
