TINUI NOTES.

Tho Maori meetinghouse at Whakataki was opened on Friday last in the presence of a large uuinber of visitors from the surrounding district. The dances, hakas, etc., were much appreciated by those present. The dinner, which was served in a large diningroom, proved how well the Maori is schooled in the art of cookery. A very enjoyable dauce was given iv the eveuiug. a visit to the Native settlement at Whakataki just vow gives oue a good iusight into Maori life.
While ou this subject, I might mention that it has been suggested that a well-known Tiuni te.in of haka dancers should challenge a team from the Whakafaki pa.
A ciicket match; Tinui v. Mataikona, was played in Tinui ou Saturday last, aud resulted iv a win for the former. For the home team 0'Dounghue and Clarer put up the best scores, while for Mataikona tho most conspicuous players were R. Barton and H. O'Kane. Mr and Mrs Pago kindly provided afternoon tea, which was greatly appreciated by the players aud visitors.
Mr ,1. Anderson's mauy friends will be pleased to hear that his health coutinues to improve.
Mr Mclsaac, Ghairmau of the School Committee, has been asked to coutest the Wairarapa seat at tho next general election.
Messrs Burr and Huuter, the contractors for metalling the Whakataki Valley-road, are making good headway with their work.
Another nutcher's shop is to be opened in Tinui shortly, with a probable reduction iv the price of meat.
Tho late Mr W. W. Smith, whose death was reported last week from Cambridge, bad mauy friends iv Tinui, where for a number of years he managed Messrs J. Nathan aud Co.'s store. Sorgeaut-Major Syduey Smith, who was killed during the Transvaal War, was a brother of deceased.
