opportunity presouted itself. When I was in Bulls, at Colonel Gorton's funeral, I noticed that the new Town Hall in the township—a very creditable building of brick, by the way—was in a fairly forward state. It was opened last -week. A feature of the formal proceedings was a presentatiou to Mr James Bull, practically the fouuder of the township Among those signing the address was Sir John Batty Tuke, M.D., who practised his profession in Raugitikei in the very early days. In those times you could ride crosscountry in any direction, for tliere was scaroely a fence in the whole district. Mr. Bull had a sawmill, the first in the district, I think, aud a good deal of his timber was sent by waggon to Wanganui, the priuoipal market, a distance by road of over thirt3 7 miles. It was a two days trip, there and back, for five horses aud a driver, and must have been pretty expensive haulage. But it paid the sawmiller. Many of Mr Bull's erstwhile employes have done well for themselves since—the Baileys for instance. Mr Bull has travelled a good deal of late years. He went Home in IS7l>, when going Home was a more serious jaunt than it is now. Raugitikei gave him a great send-off. All the old identities were at the banquet. I saw Mr Bull at Mr Johu Stevens' resideuce ou our return from Colonel Gorton's funeral. He has altered surprisiugly little, and wears his years marvellously. Another signature was that of Mrs Jas. McDonnell, widow of the wellknown "Big Mac of the Hoe." What a flood of recollections the mention of the name of. this old identity of the fifties brings to iniud ! I was uot aware that his widow still survives. I have not seen her for over forty years. She must be well ou to ninety years of ftge. Her deceased husband was the soul of hospitality aud goodhearteduess, aud at "The Hoe" could always be lound "full and plenty." The old pioueers of those early days are fast disappearing! I met an old resideut who recollects meeting Sir Johu Batty Tuke, now with a host of letters to Ins name, then plain Dr Tuke. He went Home, and in the interval has made a great name for himself as a scientist, having produced quite a number of erudite works on abstruse medical subjects. He had no scope in Raugitikei in the fifties. People never died there iv those days.
