THE BESSES O' TH' BARN BAND.

South African criticisms-teem with complimentary allusions to tlio niarveilous superiority of the Besses iv brass music. Regarding the Capo Town concerts it was said that the performance was distinguished by a crispness of attack, and a soft lingering over the delicate passages of the various pieces that was quite a rovelatiou to many who predicted chat blare would be the chief characteristic of a brass baud's playing. On the contrary the harmony and melody were ao tenderly balanced as to place the brass instruments on a plane quite higher than that winch is ordinarily associated with them. Iv the concerted pieces the most popular were Waldteufel's waltz " Estudiautina," Rimer's fantasia " Memories of Britain," Douglass's arrangement of "Reminiscences of Tschaikowsky," Meyerbeer's triumphant march, "Schiller," Mendelssohn's "Ruy B]ass," and Wagner's "laying Dutchman." Mr E. Brigbtwell delighted the vast audience with Naylor's ''Woodland Echoes," played on the xylophone with remarkable skill. Also in the solos Mr W. Ryder played an the cornet, Hartman's "Arbnckleniau," a difficult piece, calling for the exercise of iruch skill. As an encore ho gave "The Lost Chord," an exquisite performance. The vast capacity of tlio euphonium was demonstrated by Mr E P. Kerry in Winter-bottom's "Fantasia Fantastique." As extra pieces the hand gave "Hail, Smiling Morn" and "The Village Blacksmith." The whole rjerformance was characterised by precision and well-balanced melody, and fully merited tlio great ovation accorded it. Tne Mastertou season, strictly limited, commences at the Town Hall on Tuesday. March 20th. Full particulars respecting prices, box plans, and booking by post, will be notified later. Mr A. W. Batieue, Messrs J. and N. Tait's principal touring manager, will arrive in Mastertou on Friday, and, will be pleased to meet those musically interested.
