MASTERTON RAOING OLUB.
On page 1 of this issue will be found the programme drawn up for the Autuinu Meeting of the Masterton Racing Club, which is to be held ou the Opaki racecourse ou Thursday and Friday, 17th aud 18th March. Several alterations have been made ou last year's bill-of-fare, and the changes should teud to popularise the gatherIng. There are sixteen events to be decided, and the stake inouey for distribution ruus up to £1250. Two extra open races have been provided for, making six in all. Of these the principal is the Waipipi Cap, of 375 soys, one mile and a-quarter. Others are the March Handicap, of DOsovs., six furlongs; Opaki Welter of 85sovs., minimum weight Bst, seven furlougs; Telephone Handicap, of yOaovs., five furlongs; Autumn Handicap, of HOsovs., one mile; and Final Welter Handicap, of SOsovs., oue mile. The remainder of the programme is made up of hack events (eight flat and two hurdle races), all of which are well endowed with prize-money. Entries for all events (excepting tho Maiden Hack Race) close with the secretary. Mr A. Hathaway, ou Thursday, 24 th February, at !>.30 p.m.
Tlie Egmont meeting will bo concluded to-morrow. The handicap's for the first day of the Waugauui autumn meeting are due ou Saturday. Trugauiui aud Swarthmoor were double wiuuers at the Gisborne meeting. The latter is a five-year-old chestnut mare by Mouaco from Glaurina. Oruciuella aud Diaboio are [first favourites for the Wangauui Cup. Vi met with au accident last week, setting into some wire and injuring herself severely. It will be some time before this mare will race again. Lady Madcap put up a very taking performance in the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton on Saturday. She carried ()St 131b and fairly romped home five lengths ahead of that smart colt Danube, who was attempting to give Sir George Clifford's filly 181b. The six furlongs was reeled oft" in Imiu 13 4-5 sec, which suggests that there was no loitering at any part of the journey. It is the fastest time since the race was initiated in lb'B4, the Imiu 14sec by Menschikott' in 1901 being the nearest approach to it. Lady Madcap was got by Clauranald from Madowla, by Trenton, from Azalea, by (Jalliard, and is thus a full-sister to the flying Kirrieniuir. Mr E. J. Watt has disposed of Separator to a Olive sportsman, the price being somewhere in the regiou of a hundred guineas. The little Searou Delaval horse goes into Geo. Hope's stable. Snowfoot, a three-year-old bay gelding by Soult—Helen McGregor, who first saw the light of the day up Auckland way, won tne Flying Hndicap at the Canterbury Park (Sydney) meeting on Saturday last. He carried 7.12, and ran in the nomination of his owuer. Mr H. Marsdeu.
The appeal of J. McLauglilin agaiust tlie tine of £10 imposed ou him by the Daunevirke Racing Club for not running Full Cry in tlie second start of the Waikopiro Hurdle Race, at tliafc Club's spring meeting, was considered by the Hawke's Bay Metropolitan Committee last week. It will be remembered that tlie race in which Full Cry was engaged was run before time in the first instance, and McLauglilin scratched his Jiorse for the second start. The Metropolitan body resolved that the appeal was not received within fourteen days as provided by rule 8, part 31, Rules of Racing; that under rule 9, part 31, the Committee has the right to review the decision of the stewards of the Daunevirke Racing Club, aud considers that they were in error in imposing a fine of £10, and orders a refund of the fine to be made to McLauglilin.
This last month the New Zealandbred Golden Cairn has run four seconds in Victoria. The owner of Roosevelt has placed his horse on the sale list, as lie considers he is shamefully treated by all handicappers. Full Cry has been blistered and consequently is now one of tlie drone brigade. McLaughliu anticipates lie will .soon be all serene again, and if his forecast proves correct Reynard's sou will rejoin the toilers before many moeus are over. The other day au agent, acting on behalf of au Australian buyer, asked Mr T. H. Lowry to put a price oil Chanteuse, but as the figure asked was somewhat in advance of what was expected, the mare did not change hands. Gold Thread was shipped to Sydney on Friday last, in view of forthcoming Australian engagements. It is probable that the chestnut mare will be followed by a team of jumpers from Mr Donnelly's stable, who are to compete in the winter hurdle and steeplechase events. Amongst the number will be Eldorado, who has given evidence of turning out a firstclass timber topper. Prior to the start for the Richmond Plate at Christchurch on Saturday, Perm bolted, and, jumping the fence, dislodged Murfitt, who was riding tlie colt. '.The result was that the jockey had his arm broken in three places, besides receiving other minor injuries. The colt was allowed to be withdrawn from the race owing to this untoward event happening, and the totalisator investments were returned. Waimoa, wttile doing three-quarter pace on the Hastings track, one day last week, put his shoulder out badly, and it will ibe some time before he will be able to race again. This horse was very well, and it is bad luck for his owner to lose his services for the remainder of the season.
