COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT.
Following is the report submitted by tho Engineer to the Masterton County Council yesterday : — Opaki Kidiug.—Proposed subdivision of Matahiwi Estate—l have inspected the roads in company with Mr Holmes and his surveyor, and there is little alteration required on tho road located and proposed to be formed. I would respectfully suggest a deviation in the extension line asked to be dedicated to the Matahiwi northern boundary. A line bearing in a direction northeast tlirou gh original lots 2 aud 3, is more favourable, as it traverses au open valley with ground nearly level. The general course heads for a low saddle immediately above the homestead of the late Mr Brown Hunt, where a more favourable connection might be effected with the Miki Miki-road. Mr Holmes has signified his willingness to give the alternative line conditionally upon the road being left uufeuced and not used until such time as it is made a through road to the Miki Miki.
Te Whiti Riding.—Masterton-Wai-mata-road—While some extensive stripping is being made in connection with metalling Contract No. 207 at the Te Ore Ore pit, I have "made terms with the contractor for the delivery of some four hundred loads to make up depressions on the side widths. I have also culverted and improved the junction of the Weraiti with the main road by filling up the side drains aud raising the roadway.
Weraiti-road—l beg to direct the Council's attention to the necessity for acquiriug a quarry at the Weraiti saddle. An area of about two aud a-quarter acres would gefc a workable and good supply of metal. It is probable that the next coutract from the Taueru Bridge might be economically metalled from this source.
Rangituinau Riding.—Wangaehuroad : Some 130 cubic yards of stone has been delivered on the weak limestone length north of the Wangaehu bridge. The largest stones on the newly metalled lengths south of the Waugaehu bridge are being broken, and 1 purpose carting some fine quality metal to assist the looser portions in setting.
Te Ore Ore-Bideford-road : Timber has been ordered for replacing the old culverts between mile pegs 3 and 4.
Wainuioru Riding.—Weraiti-Ferny - hurst-road: Coutract No. 203, 18 cliaius of metalling, was finished by the contractor on the 15th of last mouth, together with au extra chain of metalling.
East Coast-ioad : Building a roadman's cottage at Motuwaireka. The work was practically finished on my visit of inspection on 2?th ult., aud the work showed evidence of good quality of workmanship.
Blairlogie-East Coast-road: Contract No. 20(5, delivering 2500 cubic yards of metal. The contractor is making steady progress with the work.
Weraiti-Feruyhurst-road: Contract No. 207. Some delay was occasioned starting this work, but the contractors are now on the ground, and are stripping the pit preparatory to commencing the work.
Masterton-Wainiata-road : Taueru to Muugapakia section, Contract No. 208, delivering I'dOO cubic yards of metal. The contractor has started operations on the Northern cud of his work from the rock quarries.
Alfredtou Riding. — Alfredtou-Weber-road: Tiraumea section, Contract No. 195 (L. aud G.): The above work, which is under maintenance, will be taken off the contractor's hands on the lObh iust.
Contract No. 210, one mile, more or less, of metalling was commenced on Ist iust,, only three teams being then employed. I urged the contractor to comply with the specified number of ten teams to insure the completion of tho work in the dry season.
Castle Hill-road Contract No. 171, 19 chains of formation (G. G.), approaches to aud from the Taueru bridge. The above work, the completion of which has been some time in abeyance, is now taken off the contractor's hands.
A balance of £7 (G.G.) has been utilised in providing culverts on former unfinished lengths on above road.
I would recommend that the balance of the bridge loan be expended in painting aud adjusting the structure. The survey of the Spring Hill-road, for Castlepoiut County, has been completed. Tawataia to Alfredton Section—Contract No. 20S), delivering 720 cubic yards of metal, let at last meeting, is proceeding, about 200 cubic yards of metal having been delivered.
It was resolved that Crs Beetham, Morris and the Engineer be appointed to confer with Mr Mcßae with regard to the question of acquinug a quarry at the Weraiti saddle.
The Engineer was instructed to turn the water from Everett's cutting along Mr Buick's fence, permission having been received from the latter.
It was decided that the bridge over the Taueru river at Wingate's be pantied. The report was adopted.
