DEFICIENT BRAKE POWER.
SIGNALMAN'S PRESENCE OF MIND.
MELBOURNE, Monday,
Grouu. driver of the first enigue, complained that before leaving Stawell his engine was not properly braked. It appears that the eugiue was practically without brake power on the fatal journey. The railway officials admit that the second enigue was of low brake powex.
THa. sigualman's story stated that thejßitionary engine had nothing to do wiraHilie disaster. The line had been made clear for goods. He weut down the platform with the staff, but when the train was within fifty yards of the station he saw that she was travelling too fast. He ran back to the signalbox to turn iier off the loop on to the main line, but was too late, Sli9 was over the intersection, and making straight for the dead end. He heard Giliiard cry out, '-'For God's sake hit me on the head —put me out of this!" and then rau for the doctor.
