MASTERTON I. v. OAKLTON I

(Bγ " Tub Bowler."}

This championship match was continued on the Park Oval ou Saturday last. The first iuniugs of Mastertou realised 115) runs, the last three wickets puttiug on only 11 runs. Carltou, in their second effort, made 270 ruus, Skelley 71, Ogier 03, aud Madsen 3!) not out, being tho highest scorers. The detailed scores are :— MASTERTON. —First Innings. The Mastertou team, who ou the previous fortnight, iiad lost 7 wickets for 108 ruus, only managed to add a further 11 ruus to the total before the last wicket fell. Redmond, who was

"not out" with 1 , .) runs to his credit, batted well, aud it was unfortunate for his team that the remaining batsmen could not keep their wickets up. Carltou commenced their second innings well, Waugh aud Styles remaiuing partners until the score sheet showed 41 runs, when the latter was caught, by Redmond. The outgoing batsman made some good strokes to the off, but is not such an aggressive batsman as lie was last season. Waugh was stumped by Essou when the total reached 55, after contributing 22 ruun by good cricket. Mascelle, Hoar, aud Moss were disposed of with an additional 24 runs to the total. Skelley aud Ogier now became associated, and put up what I think is a record for cup matches—vi?., 122 runs for the sixth wicket. Both these batsmen played careful cricket until well set, and then ruus were scored at a very fast rate, boundary after boundary being recorded. The bowliug was changed several times, but had very little effect, aud it was not until the score sheet showed the good score of 20:2 runs for G wickets that the partnership was dissolved. Ogier was the first to return to tho pavilion, aud was shortly followed by Skelley. Both these batsmen gave a good display of cricket, playing the good length balls, aud driving the loose oues to the boundary. Skelley's contribution was 71 aud Ogier's 62. Of the remaining batsmen, Madssii played free cricket for his contribution of 31) not out, no less than 7 boundary hits being to his'credit. I must congratulate the Carltou team ou their fine performance witli the bat. The Masterton team have now to make th« large score of 305 ruus to secure a win. The match will probably be concluded on Saturday the sth March. The ground fielding of the Mastertou team was good, but several catches were missed. Esson was in fine form behind the wickets, stumping :-5 batsmeu aud catching two others, a performance of which he sholud feel proud.
