"PRISONERS AND CAPTIVES."
Above the voices of the street I heard a voice m}' heart held dear; So loud it rang, so ravish'ng sweet, I could not choose but stand to hear. Each mellow phrase, each quick repeat
Cried to me through tho young Spring night, And lo! Within a glance's flight, Throuah din of wheels and hurrying feet, Lit by the street-lamp's amber light, A prisoned thrash sang high and clear. The gold lights glimmered, blurred with tears— Poworless to save, I passed j t ou by As one who. dreams, and dreaming, hears His own doom ol captivity. . . . Ah, Little Brother, we are peers, Though brief for yon the time shall be Ere the Dark Warden sets you free; Yon will be free betimes, while I, Pent in the Labyrinth of Years, Sing of the spring that's lost to me.
