"MUSINGS."
I ask not ling'ring years of slothful rest, To bcood upon the past, by age oppress'd, But, rather —ere my manhood may decay— To fall in harness, fighting in life's fray. Sudden ami sharp, I fain would hear the call— No time for vain regrets, when once I fall. Swift, from the straggle, into death's repose— The goal of life—an endless sleep disclose. No tearing at the heart-strings, when I part From those I huld most dear within my heart; And if the world this wish would heartless deem, And all for self—an egotistic dream— This answer to its censure would I give: The sudden wrench is best for those that live; Better than weary watching—day by day— The JgKed one suffer aud life ebb One sudden wrench, the pain and parting o'er— The quick, the dead, may suffer nothing more. —J.S., Mastertou.
