TE WHARAU NEWS.
{Special to Daily Times.)
Like most of the otner districts along the Coast we have had our share of the recent rains, which swept up the Coast and Valley. The showers will be a boon to those who have rape crops in. Settlers in this locality are now putting on gangs of men to lay poison for the destruction of the rabbit. I am informed that in some instances the rodents are not taking the baifc very readily. The cause is easily accounted for—too much green feed is available wherewith to satisfy their appetites. This is rather a serious matter for the settlers, as the work may have to be repeated in consequence. The pest iv this district has been greatly reduced as compared with its prevalence in former years, but this season has been favourable to a degree for the rabbits' breeding.:: The annual picnic of the farmers of this portiou of the Oqasfe took place at Mr McGregor's, at Hikorangl, on February 2ud. There was a good muster of settlers, although many more would have been present if weather conditions had been more favourable. I hear Mr F. L. H. Cotter has bought out Mr F. Scott at a highly satisfactory figure. lam informed that the Natives of Te Wharau are to give a dinner on the loth of the present month in honour of one of their departed chiefs. Many pakeha friend 3 are to be invited. The writer understands that the function is to be on a grand scale.
